SQL Server Discovery Methods

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This article explains the SQL Server discovery methods available in UpSearch Authorize and how they are used to identify and locate Microsoft SQL Server instances throughout the environment.

UpSearch Authorize is an on-premises, agentless desktop application with a small installation footprint. The digitally signed and antivirus-whitelisted application discovers, verifies, and collects information about Microsoft SQL Server instances and the underlying Windows Operating Systems throughout the environment.

UpSearch Authorize provides multiple SQL Server discovery methods to support enterprise-wide visibility, including identification of previously unknown SQL Server instances across both on-premises and cloud-based environments.

Discovery behavior and coverage are influenced by environmental configuration, network accessibility, privileges, and SQL Server network settings.

Main Discovery Methods

  1. Active Directory DNS
    • DNS Server: Select “Automatic” or specify the name or IP address of an Active Directory DNS server to query for hosts with installed SQL Server instances. When “Automatic” is selected, the application will use WMI queries to determine the current computer’s DNS server configuration.
    • DNS Domain: Select “Automatic” or specify the Active Directory domain name used for DNA queries. When “Automatic” is selected, the application uses the current computer’s Active Directory domain.
  2. IP Subnet: Select “Automatic” or provide a list of subnets using CIDR notation to scan for SQL Server instances. When “Automatic” is selected, the application uses the current computer’s IP configuration to determine subnets for scanning.
  3. IP Range: Provide a list of IP ranges to include in discovery and inventory operations. If your organization uses public domains or segmented network environments, the IP Range discovery method may be required.
  4. Computer Names: Provide a list of computer names to be included in discovery and inventory operations.

Additional Discovery Options

  • Exclude Subnets: Provide a list of subnets using CIDR notation to exclude from connectivity testing and discovery operations.
  • Limit Subnets: Provide a list of subnets using CIDR notation to limit the scope of connectivity testing. Only hosts within the specified subnet(s) will be included in discovery results.
  • Exclude Computer Names: Provide a list of computer names to exclude from connectivity testing and discovery operations. Wildcards are supported. IP addresses associated with excluded computer names may also be resolved and excluded during discovery processing.
